NAPPO WELCOMES ITS NEW CHIEF SCIENTIST, DR. FRANCISCO JAVIER TRUJILLO ARRIAGA

The North American Plant Protection Organization (NAPPO) Executive Committee is very pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Francisco Javier Trujillo Arriaga as the new NAPPO Chief Scientist.

Dr. Trujillo Arriaga will lead the fulfillment of the NAPPO Strategic Plan (2022-2026) and the Executive Committee’s priority plant health goals for North America. His appointment as Chief Scientist comes at a time when NAPPO is undergoing a strategic shift in focus to make science-based decisions the guiding principle of our regional plant protection organization’s projects and products.Dr. Trujillo Arriaga will be moving to Raleigh, North Carolina in mid-June 2024.

Dr. Trujillo Arriaga brings a wealth of scientific and international plant health experience, leadership, and credibility to NAPPO, and has a demonstrated commitment to advancing the collective interests of North America through the development and application of science-based harmonized approaches to plant health.

Dr. Trujillo Arriaga has many years of experience as senior policy official in the Mexican agricultural ministry as it relates to leading large scale plant pest control and eradication programs as well as being a key member of the government’s international phytosanitary trade negotiating team.

From 2018-2022 he was the Director of SENASICA (Servicio Nacional de Sanidad, Inocuidad, y Calidad Agroalimentaria) and from 2006-2018 he served as Director General of Plant Health in Mexico.

Dr. Trujillo Arriaga was Chair of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Commission on Phytosanitary Measures from 2018-2020 and Vice Chair from 2016-2017. He previously served NAPPO as the Mexico representative to the Executive Committee and as part of the Working Group (now known as the Advisory and Management Committee).

Dr. Trujillo Arriaga has been a leader in plant health science at both the domestic and international levels. He has a Doctoral degree in Entomology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a degree in Agronomy from the Autonomous University of Chapingo in Mexico.
